Community Rotation SitesMacon County WIC, Decatur, IL The Macon County Women, Infant, and Children clinic is part of the Macon County Health Department. Macon County WIC services Decatur and all of the surrounding areas. WIC is dedicated to providing nutrition information and free food to help mothers, babies and children under five years old get the nutrients and education they need for proper growth and development. Dietetic Interns at Macon County WIC counsel prenatal women and teenagers on proper nutrition and promote breastfeeding and its advantages. The Macon County WIC program places a strong emphasis on the nutritional benefits of breastfeeding for infants and their mothers. Interns also teach proper feeding methods and nutrition for children throughout their first five years of life. Because Macon County WIC is located in the Macon County Health Department interns are given the opportunity to work with other agencies in the health department that promote nutrition education. McLean County WIC, Bloomington, IL The McLean County Women, Infant, Children clinic services McLean County and the surrounding areas. WIC provides nutrition information and supplemental foods to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children up to the age of 5. Peoria EFNEP, Peoria, IL University of Illinois Extension - Peoria County Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program Family Nutrition Program The University of Illinois Extension in Peoria County is a part of the Federal Extension Service of the US Department of Agriculture. Interns spend field experience in Community Nutrition with the Extension Educator Nutrition & Wellness & Program Assistants in the Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program and Family Nutrition Program. EFNEP & FNP provide nutrition education to limited resource families and youth and food stamp and food stamp eligible people. The mission of the University of Illinois Extension is "Helping People Help Themselves." Interns observe nutrition education to pregnant teens and women, mothers of infants, preschool parents, preschool children, school age children, youth, adults, seniors and handicapped and mentally challenged individuals. They will observe nutrition education in individual home visits, group programs, school programs, after school programs and programs at agencies, churches, housing projects and community centers. Community Cancer Center, Normal, IL The Community Cancer Center is a joint venture of BroMenn Healthcare and OSF St. Joseph Medical Center that combines the resources of both to meet its mission of improving the health status of individuals by providing comprehensive, community based cancer care. The Center focuses on outpatient care and includes services such as radiation therapy, medical oncology, promotion of prevention, early detection and screening, and community education. Activities of the dietetic intern during the community rotation will include outpatient counseling for cancer treatment and reducing cancer risks with nutrition and lifestyle. You will be involved in various community presentations such as health fairs and cooking demonstrations. The rotation will expose you to other areas of community nutrition such as Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, web-site development and other media experiences as available. Decatur Memorial
